Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
