Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
