The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
